How to Choose a “JUST RIGHT” Book |
|
It’s interesting; you like it! The title is appealing. You know and like the author.
You are comfortable reading it! The print is the right size. You like the illustrations. Some places are smooth; some are choppy.
You can read it! You understand the plot and can predict. You can tell others what it is about. There are only a few words per page you do not know. |

|
Open to any page in the book and start reading at the beginning of the page. Each time you come to a word that you aren’t sure about, either you can’t read it or you don’t know what it means, put up a finger. At then end of the page check how many fingers you have up.
0– Way TOO easy 1– Easy 2– Easy 3– JUST RIGHT 4– Difficult 5 or more– Way TOO difficult
One more thing: Can you understand what is happening in the story? Or if it is an information book, can you understand what the topic is about? Can you tell other people what it is about?
So, if the book is interesting to you, if you can read it comfortably and there are only a few words per page that you don’t know, and you can tell others what it is about, it is a JUST RIGHT book! |
